This paper focuses on the design and teaching of a new undergraduate course funded by an innovative language teaching grant at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Framed by service-learning and community translation scholarships, the class “Translating and Interpreting for Portuguese-speaking Communities,” taught in Portuguese and English to a cohort of students with different levels of proficiency (first, second, and third generation immigrants to the US from different Portuguese speaking countries), placed translation, interpretation, and community service at the center of the learning process. Students in the course collaborated with Portuguese-speaking community organizations in Massachusetts on different projects, including translating different types of materials; interpreting in dialogue settings and meetings; exploring and assessing translated materials or interpreter services at a particular organization; analyzing the need for bilingual information made available to different immigrant communities; observing others involved in the provision of translation and interpreting services; assisting organizations in the development of tool-kits for training of interpreters and translators; aiding in the design of member satisfaction surveys, etc.

Qualitative pre and post surveys were conducted to assess students’ interest in continuing to study Portuguese at more advanced levels and engaging with community translation and interpreting as future careers. Presenter will share design of syllabus, assignments, and testimonials from students.
